DIY Wed. Two former co-workers, who ditched their jobs in sales to use their design degrees, artisitcally collaborated for the first time. If you haven’t guessed one of the fore mentioned is me & the other is local artist Nicole Haney. As you can see the results were, well, fantastic! Her knowledge of printmaking & mine of graphic design joined forces to make the kind of wedding invitations people blow entire paychecks to purchase. Please take note of the shine paper & the neon ink.

Raw Vegan Cashew Cheese. In an effort to eat more whole foods & less processed vegan treats I have been reading some blogs dedicated to raw food. Many of these sites have crazy ingredients that I cannot pronounce & take days to make. I decided to use a recipe I found on VegWeb.com as inspiration, but this is my own variation on the recipe. It is a really quick and easy alternative. Best of all it is even more delicious than I imagined it would be. It will be a while before I buy tofuttii again! This can be used in place of ricotta, cream cheese or sliced cheese on a sandwich. It would make a snazzy cheese ball for a party, as I enjoyed it with some crackers & a glass of red wine.

1 1/2 cups raw cashews (not salted, not roasted)
1/4 to 1 cup water
1-2 cloves garlic finely minced
2 teaspoon sesame seeds (optional)
couple dashes salt & black pepper

Place the cashews in a medium sized bowl. Fill water two inches above cashews. It doesn’t matter if some float, and most won’t. Soak for three hours.

Now drain the cashews. Place them into a food processor & add the rest of the ingredients, pulse. Slowly add some of the water and blend & repeat until smooth. You will most likely only use 1/2 the water.
Once it is thick & fully blended scoop into saran wrap and form into a small ball or log. Cover completely & place in the refrigerator for 24 hours. The “cheese” will set and become firmer by the next day.  Then it lasts about a week in the fridge.

Makes: 4-8 servings, Preparation time: 1 day

city livingbow

Sometimes more is better, but often times, more is … well … more. This super simple wreath was up in 10 minutes flat! (It even left me with time to add some alliteration to this post.) My intension was to make the wreath on the cover of ReadyMade this month, but since the store was completely out of foam wreaths I brought home this little grapevine number instead. After further inspection, I decided that it was elegant all on its own. To satisfy my crafting urge I added one tiny brown bow made from vintage seam binding & called it day.

Picture 2present alone

No need for expensive gift wrap this year. I wrapped this rescued box in vintage rick rack & topped it with an old bow scavenged from my grandma’s basement. In fact, this box was wrapped entirely without tape. To be fair, I did use hot glue, but only did so because I did not have any tape. Again, green because I used what I had & did not go buy anything. That’s 1 point Earth, 0 points economy. Sorry, economy, you’ll get yours when I get mine! Read the rest of this entry »

Riki & Brien were married November 1st on a beautiful fall day in downtown Cleveland, Ohio. The outdoor ceremony was framed by an industrial landscape and the colorful fall leaves. Guests were warmed by bon fires & vowes written by the bride & groom.

The reception took place in the adjacent warehouse converted loft where the bridal party spent the weekend. The fall theme carried through the entire event; centerpieces made of cheery tree twigs, chocolate brown table cloths, and bouquets made of cabbage, mint, vibrant lillies & wrapped in feathers. Instead of a cake, the couple constructed a multi tiered tower of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts & the food was made from local ingredients purchased at the West Side Market.

blog made in 216 postcard2

So blog posts have been few & far between lately … the reason? I am helping with the MADE in the 216 HOLIDAY SHOPPE, including designing the postcards for the event. (making Pierre & Fifi stand still to pose for their portrait wasn’t easy!) Made in the 216 has been a weekend long even in the past. However, this year ROOM SERVICE is taking over the empty storefront directly next to the brand new Capitol Theater in order to bring a month long shopping experience. Do not miss the kick off party November 6th! Partake in the cocktails, enjoy music from DJ Doc & buy lots of awesome presents for your friends & family! There is an after party at the newly revamped Happy Dog (who’s new hot dog/veggie dog menu is almost too good to be bar food) with live music from The Buried Wires & Filmstrip. Don’t fret if you cannot make it to the kick off party, there will be BYOB parties with live music from local bands each Friday in November at the Holiday Shoppe. And of course, you can buy your awesome hand screened Tshirts, one of a kind jewelry & things you didn’t even know you needed all month long!
