The happiest music in the world. “Happy Hour” reaches a new level at the Happy Dog when DJ Kishka takes up his post behind the turn table. From the bandstand DJ Kishka unites 20-somethings & folks reliving thier glory days all in one room, & more shockingly with the same music! But don’t be fooled, the happiest music in the world isn’t always paired with the nicest lyrics. A few of my favorites include She’s Too Fat for Me, the Strip Polka, Ice Cubes in Beer & the sadist of all No Beer on Sunday! The music fits seamlessly into the aesthetic of the bar. I love that The Happy Dog has embraced its old world charm even while being a part of an up & coming neighborhood. To me, hanging out there always felt like I was drinking in my grandparent’s rec-room. Now I feel like thier records are there too! Polka Night, as I refer to it, is hands down the one thing in Cleveland EVERYONE should experience, it is classic Cleveland! Join the fun this Friday for some tots ‘n shots —tater tots that is.

Ice skating, it’s like riding a bike! Once you learn you never forget. However, if you learned on real ice, skating on the environmentally friendly faux ice rink at Wade Oval will take some getting used to. It is made of polymer, a.k.a plastic, and it dulls your skates like crazy. So I do recommend bringing your own as they will surely be sharper than the rentals they are dishing out. Jeff rented his skates and was sliding all over the place. I brought my own and started out like a pro, but after 45 minutes of skating my blades were dull, & my skating looked more like Jeff’s. Despite my complaints, I still recommend this as a fun winter outing. If nothing else, the setting is picturesque. An outdoor rink in the park, lined with old fashioned hay bails & holiday music through the sound system, what could be a better family adventure or romantic date? Don’t worry if you’re a freeze baby such as myself, there are plenty of heaters to warm up your mittens. As an added incentive, the rink is located adjacent to the Cleveland Museum of Art so it is easy to make a day of it. A CHEAP day of it! Admission to the museum is free & skating is free (if you bring your own) & rental is only $3. I suggest checking your local thrift store for skates and saving your $3 for the parking meters. Not only will you look like a pro, you can have them on hand for future skating excursions and chances are they will be a better quality than the rentals. Read the rest of this entry »

So blog posts have been few & far between lately … the reason? I am helping with the MADE in the 216 HOLIDAY SHOPPE, including designing the postcards for the event. (making Pierre & Fifi stand still to pose for their portrait wasn’t easy!) Made in the 216 has been a weekend long even in the past. However, this year ROOM SERVICE is taking over the empty storefront directly next to the brand new Capitol Theater in order to bring a month long shopping experience. Do not miss the kick off party November 6th! Partake in the cocktails, enjoy music from DJ Doc & buy lots of awesome presents for your friends & family! There is an after party at the newly revamped Happy Dog (who’s new hot dog/veggie dog menu is almost too good to be bar food) with live music from The Buried Wires & Filmstrip. Don’t fret if you cannot make it to the kick off party, there will be BYOB parties with live music from local bands each Friday in November at the Holiday Shoppe. And of course, you can buy your awesome hand screened Tshirts, one of a kind jewelry & things you didn’t even know you needed all month long!
MADE in the 216 HOLIDAY SHOPPE
store hours
Monday-Thursday 5-9pm
Fridays 5-11pm (bands playing in the basement & BYOB)
Saturdays 11-9 Sundays 12-7

stay tuned for more info on the event!
p.s. Please vote for ROOM SERICE on the FOX 8 HOT LIST. Much obliged!

Don’t let a dull knife get in the way of good cooking. Today Kevin Noon will be sharpening knives at the Tremont Farmers’ Market. Bring your knives, scissors, sheers, and even food processor blades. He will make them like new again using old world techniques. Don’t worry, if kevin is not there, he and Garth Proctor alternate weeks at the market. Also, each freshly sharpened knife comes with a complimentary BAND-AID.

If you haven’t been to the Tremont Farmers’ Market yet, you are missing out. Each week I look forward to seeing what locally grown produce will be there. They have fresh fruit and vegetables, many specialty items and music. Tonight I will be making a spicy thai stir fry with my purchases.
